A sequel to the popular 2021 co-op shooter-game, Aliens: Fireteam Elite, has just been announced by developers Cold Iron Studios and it is coming to PS5 this summer.

Cold Iron announced the game (via IGN) and shared some details about changes that will improve upon the 2021 game. For example, they have added an extra player option that offers four player co-op instead of three like before and added other requested improvements.

This sequel comes at a time where the Alien franchise is as alive as its been since the 1970’s, in both games and film. The gameplay found in Fireteam Elite 2 is more similar to the 1986 Aliens movie where there are colonial marines and hundreds of Xenomorphs to fight, and the game takes inspiration and improves on what was done well in the classic film.

The developers have also shared that there are going to be more character classes, new enemies, deeper team-based mechanics, and a more advanced weapon and weapon upgrade system.

The first game was popular when it launched in 2021, so its no surprise a sequel was in development. The original built upon the combat and the ambience found in the classic 1986 film, and less like the survival-horror elements featured in other parts of the series.

This announcement compliments the recent news of a sequel to the 2014 classic, Alien: Isolation, having its first teaser trailer released. Fireteam Elite 2 is not supposed to be identical, but rather explore the different aspects of the Alien universe and show the more combat-based side of the franchise as Isolation instead takes most of its inspiration from the 1979 film.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 arrives this summer, and will certainly be one to watch as it faces steep competition in a year full of incredible games. The developers will share more up until release to give fans something to look forward to as the sequel draws closer.
