Horsehead nebula

The Horsehead Nebula (Barnard 33) is a famous dark nebula in the constellation Orion, appearing as a dark horse's head silhouette against glowing gas (IC 434) because it's a dense cloud of dust blocking background light. Located about 1,300-1,600 light-years away near Alnitak (Orion's Belt), it's a challenging but rewarding target for astrophotographers, part of the larger Orion molecular cloud, and offers astronomers a prime spot to study how radiation interacts with interstellar matter.
