Alien: Earth Season 2 is making a change that will bring the show closer to the legacy of the original Alien movies. Alien: Earth Season 1 was filmed in Thailand, but Season 2 has moved production to Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom, the same studio where Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, and Prometheus were filmed.
“What I can say is we start [shooting] this summer. We’re getting close,” Alien: Earth showrunner Noah Hawley tells Deadline in a new interview. “I did a stage walk today past the props and costumes. Things are being built. It’s always exciting to see it. We had a great experience in Thailand, but for a couple of reasons London is a better home for us long-term.”
There’s another behind-the-scenes connection between Alien: Earth and the original Alien. The FX series’s production designer, Neil Lamont, is the son of Alien production designer Peter Lamont.
“Neil did some work on it when he was a teen,” said Hawley. “I love those connections, and how personal this franchise is to people. The British art department is legendary: You know however difficult the concept, it will executed the first time to the highest degree.”
Alien: Earth Season 2 Will Expand on the Promise of Season 1
During the interview, Hawley also teased things to come in Alien: Earth’s second season. It sounds like the show’s sophomore outing will expand on everything fans loved about the first season. Hawley said that Alien: Earth Season 2 “certainly expands on the promise of the first,” and added, “It’s a bigger show, more world building, and I can’t think of a better place for taking on that bigger challenge.”
He also addressed the addition of Game of Thrones alum Peter Dinklage to the Alien: Earth cast in Season 2. “Obviously, this franchise has a lot of iconic roles in it,” Hawley hinted while keeping Dinklage’s specific role a secret. “I am, for better or worse, an ensemble writer who has never met a character I didn’t like, but he’s got a major role, and people are going to feel it’s a worthy role for him.”
What Is Alien: Earth About?

Alien: Earth is set in the year 2120, two years before the original Alien. The story begins when the deep-space research vessel USCSS Maginot crash-lands on Earth. “Wendy” leads a ragtag group of underprepared child hybrids (humanoid robots with human consciousness installed) created by Prodigy, one of the five corporations that govern the world, to investigate and discover a menagerie of dangerous alien lifeforms.
Hawley created Alien: Earth, the first-ever television series set in the Alien universe. The show stars Sydney Chandler, Alex Lawther, Essie Davis, Samuel Blenkin, Babou Ceesay, Adarsh Gourav, and Timothy Olyphant.
Alien: Earth’s first season proved a hit when it debuted. FX was quick to renew the show for a second season.
“It has been our great privilege to work with Noah for more than a decade on some of FX’s best and biggest shows, and we are thrilled to extend our partnership well into the future,” FX Chairman John Landgraf said at the time. “Noah never stops surprising us with truly original stories— and his unique ability to bring them to vibrant life as a director and producer as well as writer makes him extraordinary. We can’t wait to get to work on the next season of Alien: Earth, as well as some equally exciting future projects in advanced development.”
Alien: Earth Season 1 is streaming now on Hulu.
