This movie is so good. It reminds me how big, mysterious, and beautiful the universe is. I've never read the book, but I bought it and I'm so excited to sit down and read for hours. Science fiction is my favorite genre.
What do you think about this movie? And, for those who have read the book, are there differences between the movie and the book?

I haven’t seen the movie yet unfortunately. I will say though that the book is one of my absolute favourites, I hope you enjoy it!
I loved the concept, Ryan Gosling was a little too funny for me. I felt like I was watching a comedy, and the Karaoke scene was a bit cringe for me, and the Officer played by Lionel Boyce was just too nice..
Maybe it’s just me though. I loved everything else
I saw this twice in theaters, instantly became one of my favorite movies of all time!!
I liked the movie. Having read the book, the biggest thing I didn’t like about the movie was how much of the story it glossed over. Which is expected, for a movie.
So if you liked the movie, and were wishing for a more in-depth story, I think you’ll enjoy the book as well.
Both are fantastic. I like the book more. There are some differences between the two but nothing crazy big. The book really just gives more detail, dives into some topics deeper and just spends more time on things overall. I didn’t really understand all of the science stuff talked about, but Weir does a really good job of explaining things simply. I think you’ll really enjoy the book!
It was shit.
SPOILERS AHEAD!
Something weird that I noticed in the movie, is that towards the end, you can briefly spot a big scar on Ryan Gosling’s forearm.
In the book, when rocky gets out of his habitat to rescue him as the ship is spinning out of control, once Ryland Grace regains consciousness, he finds an unconscious Rocky **on the human side of the ship with Earth atmosphere**, and he is the one to lift him back into his habitat with Eridian atmosphere, burning himself in the process (Rocky’s body is scalding hot!) and getting a big scar.
In the movie, they removed all that: once Ryland regains consciousness, he finds Rocky sealed himself back on his side of the ship *before* going unconscious in his turn. So he doesn’t need to rescue him, and doesn’t get injured in the process.
Yet, for a couple seconds, you can spot a big burn scar on his forearm.
So I’m guessing they didn’t film in order, and changed their mind halfway through filming?
Just a funny little nitpick, I thought.
Great book, fun movie, though I personally would have preferred if they made the movie as less of a comedy. You kept forgetting the actual stakes back home on Earth often. But I was thoroughly entertained.
Loved the movie, reading the book at the moment and I can’t recommend it enough. There are a lot of things which the movie skips and things that are more detailed in the book.
If you liked the movie for the scientific topics, the book has even more of that.
I binged listened to the audiobook a couple days before seeing the movie. I really enjoyed both. I personally wouldn’t of minded if it was a little longer but that’s just me.
I was at the premiere some weeks ago with a group of friends (we are all quite into Sci-Fi). For me, it’s a 10/10. My friends loved it, we had an amazing time together. Would definitely recommend and I’m looking forward to watching the movie again in some months at home.
Didn’t read the book, we discovered the movie 3-4 days before going to the cinema by accident. But I will get the book at some point for sure!
Read the book on release, and i can tell you that it is a fantastic piece of writing. I couldn’t put it down and finished it in 2 days.
First half was great. Some of the best sequences and story I’ve ever seen.2nd half turned into a Disney plus movie of the week
Both the book and the movie are great. Sure, the movie had to gloss over or omit some things from the book, but I still found the movie to hold up really well. I especially loved the music, and my god planet Adrian was so damn cool looking.
I haven’t read the book or seen the movie. But with Andy Weir’s first book, “The Martian”, I did read the book first and I liked the movie a lot better. The movie cut out several extra “problems” that Watley had to solve on his way to Schiaparelli Crater. Listening to the audiobook, I was getting impatient. “Oh no. FFS. Not another one”. The movie was better. Editing is your friend.
But I plan on reading “Hail Mary” before I find the movie.
Fantastic movie, I loved any minute of it. I haven’t read the book.
My only nitpicking complaint is they completely ignored time dilation. Otherwise I really enjoyed the movie.
