A fully lit global mosaic of the Moon made from LRO data (2013, NASA/ASU) shows a 360° view


The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO)'s wide-angle camera made a global mosaic of the Moon.
This view uses tens of thousands of images taken over time and fixed for lighting and viewing angles to make it look like the surface is fully lit by the sun.

    By the way, this wasn’t just one picture. It is a composite made up of more than 100,000 pictures taken by LRO and processed to get rid of differences in lighting on the surface.

    Now we know what the rest of it looks like. Two days ago we didn’t.

    Strapping humans to bombs and firing them at the moon is wicked cool.
