Whether these beings inspired religion or religion mentions these specific beings, I’m not sure. But I think one of those things could be true.

Don’t be fooled these beings can appear however they want depending on the era and the people they are dealing with. Since we live in the space age, they mostly present themselves as spaceships. But when dealing with religious people, they can take forms that resemble biblical angels or other spiritual imagery. They adapt the appearance to whatever fits the culture and beliefs of the time. Nowadays both belief systems exist side by side, so the phenomenon appears in both forms depending on the audience.
