Disclosure Day is edging ever closer, as the sci-fi thriller is moving towards its theatrical release on Jun. 12, 2026. The feature is poised to be a massive cinematic event, as it marks Steven Spielberg‘s return to the genre that defined his career, revisiting some of the same themes that he explored nearly 50 years ago. Its similarities have sparked speculation that it might even be a direct sequel or spiritual successor to Close Encounters of the Third Kind, with fans highlighting visual callbacks in the trailers. The latest images from the film have reignited the secret sequel theory, as a full look at the movie’s alien UFO has been unveiled.

The most recent trailer for Disclosure Day offered a first look at the mysterious alien visitor that will be invading the picture, and the UFO that presumably carries them. However, the UFO was shrouded in clouds, obscuring the full view of the extra-terrestrial spacecraft. New images from Spielberg’s sci-fi comeback film – shared in the gallery below, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly – provide the best look yet at the aerial phenomenon, which, coincidentally, bears a striking resemblance to another well-known movie mothership.

The UFO design looks eerily similar to the spacecraft seen in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, with a bank of bright glowing lights outlining its silhouette in the night sky. While the vessel is noticeably more oblong than the circular spacecraft in the 1977 sci-fi film, the image of the UFO barreling through a thick wall of cloud in a dusty, desert location has been cited as a direct visual parallel to its potential predecessor, strengthening the theory that Disclosure Day may, in fact, be a secret sequel to Spielberg’s earlier classic.

This is a developing story…
