Homosexuality in India dates back to at least the 4th century, celebrated in ancient literature (The Kama Sutra). However, British colonization imposed laws criminalizing it in 1856, reflecting their religious beliefs —laws that were finally overturned in 2018 after 156 years.

    There is a difference between criminalising it through law and it still being something people looked down on for other reasons

    Sodomy before colonialism was still treated as unclean just not through systematic jurisdiction unless it was highly incentivised by whoever was in charge to make it so

    You are acting like men were fucking each other in the streets and everyone was clapping…men and women were still shunned, punished, tortueed and put to death, just not in a matter of the law sense

    I am not announcing what was passed was right or forgivable, but it’s just another avenue of the same thing
