THanks, OP! [Here is another great NASA image of von Karman vortices](https://dailygalaxy.com/2025/07/nasa-reveals-rare-image-of-cloud-vortices/) in the Atlantic originating from Madeira, Canary Islands, with a good, short explanation of this rare phenomenon.
This also happens to skyscrapers. If designers are not careful, unchecked vortices can cause oscillations that shake buildings apart.
