String theory is effectively a 50 year old startup that has raised billions in intellectual capital but has yet to ship a single verifiable product. It’s “The Winds of Winter” of particle physics, the prose is beautiful, the fans are dedicated, but the ending is never actually coming.
Needing 11 dimensions to explain why gravity is weak is like needing a specialized trailer, a permit from the city, and a team of six engineers just to change a lightbulb. It’s an overengineered solution to a problem the universe seems to handle just fine with four.
It is less a map of the universe and more a very prestigious support group for people who are too good at calculus. It’s the only field where you can win a Breakthrough Prize for proving that if the universe were a completely different shape and made of things that don’t exist, the math would be flawless.
