ScienceAlert explicitly says the experiment is “fully explained by standard physics.”
There’s an older ScienceAlert/AFP article and it’s even clearer: Steinberg said, “We don’t want to say anything traveled backward in time,” and the report says the photons carried no information, so this does not violate special relativity.
The researchers are not saying an individual photon was filmed entering after it exited. They are talking about averaged timing behavior in a quantum system where the photon pulse has uncertain timing and only some photons are transmitted.
