Flight from Edmonton to pv

Location: on a flight from Edmonton to puerto Vallarta.

My wife saw 3 of these moving in odd patterns flying from Edmonton to puerto Vallarta at 351pm last Thursday. She said they moved in weird directions up and randomly sideways very fast. Then she saw a plane with black smoke coming out the back all within minutes. She said 3 were shaped like prisms with black smoke behind them. Any ideas what it was?
