When researching a while back I came across triethylamine/triethylamine n-oxide, a protein stabilizer used by many marine organisms that counteracts the protein-destabilizing effects of the high pressure environment. It is known to smell amonnia- like, and of rotten eggs.
So I thought, What if thier ship was pressurized to a much different psi than our atmosphere? And perhaps triethylamine is somehow utilized to ameliorate pressure related stress like an air leak? This might explain the notorious red eyes, which may have been from ruptured blood vessels. And the claim that when The doctor operated on one of the beings, the procedure that he did included relieving pressure from inside the alien’s skull somehow. Just food for thought
