Did you know that one of the greatest catastrophes in our galactic neighborhood occurred directly behind the Orion Nebula? Just 1 to 2 light-years beyond the Trapezium Cluster, obscured by dust, two members of a multiple star system collided. The result was an explosion somewhere between a nova and a supernova. Now, 100 years after the cataclysm, the remaining stars are flying apart like bullets in different directions, and a massive explosion cloud is spreading. The luminous debris is invisible to the naked eye, but it is actually the brightest part of the Orion Nebula. Thanks to JWST infrared capabilities we got a better voew of the explosion than ever before.
