I am new to astronomy and am figuring my way around.

I notice that there are multiple variants of the Leo constellation, some omitting stars that are in others. The lines in different places. Different versions look considerably different.
What’s the deal with that?

Is anyone able to give me the name of the star that makes up the rightmost back foot of Leo. It’s circled in green in the image.

  1. The star doesn’t have a proper name that I can find but it is Rho leonis in Bayer designation and has Flamsteed number 47 (so 47 leonis).

As for the constellation shape, the fact is that there is no official designation of constellation shape in terms of connecting lines, so there are several conventions that originate from different sky atlases and their authors. The only thing that is defined is the outer border of constellations as approved by the IAU in the years, roughly 1920 iirc when the list of official constellation was voted on
