SETI: Finding The ET Signal From The Cosmic Noise

We Could Snoop on Extraterrestrial Communications Networks

Imagine you’re out in space cruising between the stars and you need to find your way. You can’t exactly use Google Maps, right? Well that’s where pulsars come in. These are dead stars that have gone supernova and are left spinning super fast shooting out beams of radiation like lighthouses in the cosmos. They’re incredibly precise, so much so that some scientists think they could be used as a sort of GPS for navigating the galaxy. This idea is what the paper “Pulsar Positioning System: A quest for evidence of extraterrestrial engineering” is all about.

Now, here’s where it gets wild. The paper suggests that maybe, just maybe, these pulsar signals are not just a natural cosmic coincidence. What if they’re actually a galactic scale engineering project by some super advanced alien civilization? It’s like finding a hidden message in the static of the universe, saying “Hey, we’re here and we’ve got some tech that might blow your mind.

This isn’t the first time humans have thought about using space for navigation, though. Back in the ’70s, Carl Sagan and his team put together the Voyager Golden Record. It’s this gold-plated disc they attached to the Voyager spacecraft, filled with sounds and images from Earth kind of like a message in a bottle thrown into the sea of space. But here’s the kicker! they included a map using pulsars to show where Earth is located. It’s like saying, “If you find this, here’s where we’re at. Come say hi maybe?

So this paper isn’t just about finding aliens. It’s about the big questions. Are we alone? Can we use the stars as signposts? And it’s a nod to our own attempts to reach out, like with the Voyager Golden Record, hoping that someone or something out there might be listening and maybe, just maybe, they’re using pulsars to find their way around too. It’s all pretty mind-boggling but that’s space for you full of mysteries and maybe’s.

So do you think pulsars are use for navigation by aliens? Do you think they are artificial or natural? What do you think? Please read at least one of the links first.
