Users of the popular online community Reddit have drawn attention to the technical aspects of the popular space horror game Alien Isolation. The discussion focused on the specialized Cathode game engine, developed by Creative Assembly exclusively for this project. Many participants expressed regret that publisher Sega and the developers themselves did not develop this technology in subsequent games, despite the commercial success and acclaim of the original source material.

During a detailed analysis of the situation, experienced players and specialists explained that Cathode’s architecture was originally created for the specific needs of a specific game. Adapting such a toolkit to other genres would have required programmers to invest enormous amounts of time and money, comparable to writing new software. EA’s Frostbite engine, whose use in role-playing projects caused numerous difficulties and criticism from internal development studios, was cited as a similar example of unsuccessful generalization.

Additional factors in the decision to abandon Cathode included Creative Assembly’s overall workload with the Total War strategy series and recent management issues, including the cancellation of several third-party projects. In today’s gaming industry, publishers are increasingly opting for ready-made, all-in-one solutions, such as Unreal Engine 5This allows for a significant reduction in the number of highly paid engineers and a reduction in production risks when creating large-scale interactive entertainment.
