The European Space Agency (ESA) and Europa-Park signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 8 June, confirming their cooperation and their shared commitment to European collaboration, innovation and public engagement.

ESA and Europa‑Park sign cooperation agreement

The agreement was signed in Rust, Germany, by ESA Director of Operations Rolf Densing, representing ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher, and Europa-Park owner and Managing Director Roland Mack, in the presence of the Federal Minister for Research, Technology and Space Dorothee Bär and ESA Director of Technology, Engineering and Quality Dietmar Pilz, and other guests from industry.

The agreement marked a new step in a relationship built on shared values. ESA and Europa-Park both celebrated their 50th anniversaries last year and share a commitment to European cooperation, excellence, technological progress and innovation. Together, they aim to make the fascination for European space activities accessible in an entertaining and interactive way, offering meaningful experiences for visitors of all ages.

The Memorandum of Understanding strengthens cooperation in education, knowledge communication and visitor experience. It will combine ESA’s expertise in space, research and technology with Europa-Park’s interactive approach to public engagement.

In a statement issued for the occasion, ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher said: “Europe’s strength lies in its ability to turn shared visions into reality. ESA embodies this in a unique way – bringing together technology, collaboration and inspiration across borders. Europa-Park reflects this spirit in its own way: as a place where ideas come to life and people come together. This creates a place that not only imparts knowledge but also opens up new perspectives: for younger generations, for families, for everyone who wants not only to observe the future but also to help shape it.”

Europa-Park owner Roland Mack said: “Both ESA and Europa-Park stand for the European spirit, cooperation across borders, innovation, quality and the conviction that great ideas always emerge when people work together on a shared vision. For decades, ESA has shown impressively how successful Europe can be when countries combine their expertise and act together. Europa-Park also lives this idea every day. For us, Europe is not just a theme, it is part of our identity.”

The agreement builds on earlier exchanges between ESA and Europa-Park, including during the Science Days and ESA Open Days, and provides a framework for future activities linking European space with education and public outreach.

The initiative was launched by the ESOC Strategy Team, which approached Europa-Park to explore how its expertise in creating engaging visitor experiences could help shape ESA’s future visitor centre. This initial exchange soon revealed opportunities for a much broader collaboration
