The season came to an end Thursday for the Greenville High School baseball Comets in the semifinals of the Father McGivney Class 2A Regional.
Breese Central edged the Comets 2-1.
The Comets took the lead in the first when Rowdy Sussenbach walked, stole second base and scored on a wild pitch. It remained 1-0 until the fourth inning when Central banged out three hits and scored twice.
Greenville had the tying run at second base with one out in the seventh, but couldn’t record a run.
The Comets had just two base hits. They were by Christian Swalley and Dominic Sanchez.
Sussenbach pitched for the Comets, going six innings and striking out seven. On offense, the Comets struck out 11 times.
The varsity GHS team, under the direction of Head Coach Todd Hutchinson, ends the season with a 22-10 record. It was the final game in the high school careers of seniors Drake Curry, Trey Melton, Dayton Oliver, Brock Riedemann, Dominic Sanchez and Rowdy Sussenbach.
Central moves on to the regional title game with a 27-9 record.
The Cougars face the host Father McGivney team Saturday at noon for the regional championship. The winner advances to the Greenville Sectional, which will be played Wednesday, June 3 and Saturday, June 6.
