Arcturus is the brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere. Despite being around the same mass as our sun, it has expanded to over 25 times its size and is about 170 times as bright. Around this time of year I find it very useful as a reference point for finding other objects when doing visual astronomy.
Absolutely one of my favorite stars to just *stare* at. Beautiful color. Nice pic!
