The Carlisle County Comets earned a come-from-behind victory over Mayfield Monday night in the final game of the First Region quarterfinals.

Monday night, the Carlisle County Comets and the Mayfield Cardinals would face off in the final matchup of the opening round in the First Region baseball tournament. After a close fought game, the Comets would come out on top, 9-7, to advance to the semifinals.

Mayfield came out strong early, taking control in the top of the second inning with a five-run frame. Luke Wooley singled to bring home a run, Tyler Jaiden later laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored another, Carson Price doubled to drive in two more runs, and Tucker Dunn drew a walk with the bases loaded to extend the Cardinals’ lead to 5-0.

The Mayfield Cardinals season came to an end Monday night in a 9-7 defeat to Carlisle County in the opening round of the First Region tournament.

Carlisle County responded in a big way in the bottom of the third inning, completely shifting the momentum of the game. Myles Fourshee hit into a fielder’s choice that brought home a run, while Jonah Bruer followed with a single to the left side of the infield to score another. Cooper Wright later laid down a sacrifice bunt that drove in a run before Kasen Perez was hit by a pitch and Maylon Hafford drew a walk, each bringing home another run as the Comets battled back to take the lead.

From there, Carlisle County remained in control throughout the later innings, holding off Mayfield’s offense to secure the 9-7 victory.

Karmine Vela earned the win in relief for the Comets after turning in a dominant performance on the mound. The right-hander pitched 3.2 shutout innings without allowing a hit while striking out seven and walking one. Tae Warren started the game for Carlisle County, allowing three hits and five runs over 1.1 innings while striking out one and walking four. Cooper Wright also appeared in relief, pitching two innings while allowing two hits and two runs, both earned, while striking out three.

Tae Warren went 2-for-4 Monday with one RBI and one run to help the Comets top the Cardinals.

Carson Price took the loss for Mayfield after allowing seven runs on five hits across 2.2 innings while striking out one and walking seven. Tucker Dunn pitched 3.1 innings in relief, giving up three hits and two runs, both earned, while striking out one and walking eight.

At the plate, Karmine Vela led Carlisle County offensively from the eight spot in the lineup, finishing 3-for-3. Myles Fourshee, Jonah Bruer, Cooper Wright, Karmine Vela, Maylon Hafford, Kasen Perez, and Tae Warren each drove in one run for the Comets. Carlisle County also showed patience throughout the night, drawing 15 walks, with Kase Kelly and Maylon Hafford each collecting three. Myles Fourshee and Tae Warren each stole multiple bases as the Comets totaled five stolen bases in the win. Defensively, Carlisle County played a clean game without committing an error, with Perez handling a team-high 10 chances in the field.

For Mayfield, Carson Price led the Cardinals offensively with two hits in four at-bats from the leadoff spot. The Cardinals also turned two double plays defensively but were unable to slow down Carlisle County’s comeback effort.

With the win, Carlisle County advances to the Region 1 semi-finals where the Comets will face McCracken County on Tuesday.
