>The U.S. and China share a common goal: building a human habitat at the lunar south pole. Both nations are locked in a race to land astronauts on the Moon and secure vital resources needed to establish a permanent base. Although the Moon is an unregulated frontier, a new report suggests that the U.S. should be prepared for a fight over control of lunar resources and territory.
>The Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies recently published a [paper](https://www.mitchellaerospacepower.org/events/military-human-spaceflight-a-key-component-to-american-space-superiority/) pushing for a military human spaceflight program that could eventually place active-duty U.S. Space Force (USSF) personnel on the Moon and on board orbital space stations for defensive operations against China’s alleged military-focused space initiatives. The report signals a dark turn for the ongoing space race, suggesting that orbital warfare looms behind ongoing efforts to establish a permanent presence on the Moon.
>The report, written by retired USSF Colonel Kyle Pumroy, warns of the threats that “China’s military-led space habitation and lunar ambitions” pose for U.S. national security. Pumroy argues that the U.S. human spaceflight and Moon programs “have been marred by inconsistency in vision, policy, and funding, allowing China to gain steady ground over time.”

Oh God imagine getting shot in a spacesuit on the moon. Do you just have like almost no chance of survival?

sure, lets just expand our imperialist ambitions to outer space because there is nothing more appealing than watching fellow humans die over water ice in some lunar crater when the alternative of just doing international cooperation is still very much available to us.

Are we just looking for well established international norms and signed treaties to violate now?

But they don’t want Americans to have affordable Healthcare. What exactly is the American military even protecting? Because it’s definitely not the American citizens

Jokes aside, a war on the moon is… essentially impossible to do without immediately losing both bases. Like, if you had a proper conflict on the moon, you basically guarantee that both bases will be wiped out, simply because you will have a very very high chance of destroying life support systems or punching many many holes in the base, and then you are just kinda… done. Like, game over, base destroyed. I doubt that we’ll see full blown battles on the moon because of this, probably something closer to a MAD strategy.

I’m imagining some dropship opening its doors and a company of space marines armed to the teeth, rushing out to a completely empty, barren wasteland with absolutely no strategic value
