Japan’s Kaguya/SELENE lunar orbiter found a vertical pit in the Moon’s Marius Hills region that scientists believe may be an opening into an underground lava tube. Later studies using NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter data strengthened the idea that some lunar pits connect to subsurface caves or tunnels. These structures could one day matter for lunar bases because they may offer natural protection from radiation, micrometeorites, and extreme temperature swings.

  1. Seems like that would be a good place to set up a base. Put a dome on top and use the tunnels.

Super cool! Can’t wait until we get boots on the moon again for direct measurements

  3. There is much discussion about using these lunar lava tubes as habitats, protected from radiation.
While possible, it is also ironic. We started living in caves. then invented buildings, then rockets to the Moon!
Only to end up living again in caves.

This is so incredible! To see evidence of theories long held knowing we’re on our back! I used to envy those who grew up in the Shuttle era, but I think we got it much cooler now.

G’Kar : How would it explain? There are things in the universe billions of years older than either of our races. They’re vast, timeless, and if they’re aware of us at all, it is as little more than ants, and we have as much chance of communicating with them as an ant has with us. We know, we’ve tried, and we’ve learned that we can either stay out from underfoot or be stepped on.

Sakai : That’s it? That’s all you know?

G’Kar : Yes, they are a mystery. And I am both terrified and reassured to know that there are still wonders in the universe, that we have not yet explained everything.

  6. I hope any landers are sure to land on surface that is more than just a thin crust covering a cane waiting to collapse under the weight of the lander…

Send a drone in there to map it. Need a relay station to gather all the data and transmit it back.

I hope we get some pics of the inside of a lava tube like this in my lifetime
