TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The United States government has declassified over 150 secret documents related to sightings of unidentified flying objects (UFOs), also commonly known as Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP). This includes peculiar sighting reports previously made by NASA astronauts on the surface of the moon during the Apollo and Gemini missions.

The US Department of Defense has released a total of 162 documents, photos, and videos that were previously classified. All of these documents originate from sightings dating back to 1947 and come from various government agencies, not limited to the Department of Defense. Other owners of these documents include the FBI and NASA.

The materials from NASA include images, audio recordings, and transcripts of astronauts reporting anomalous phenomena in outer space. However, most of these documents have actually been available in the public archives for decades and have yet to yield a definitive explanation.

“The materials archived here are unresolved cases, meaning the government is unable to make a definitive determination on the nature of the observed phenomena,” wrote a representative of the US Defense Department, as quoted from a report by Live Science on May 9, 2026. “This can occur for a variety of reasons, including a lack of sufficient data.”

Will This Answer Questions About the Existence of Aliens?

Although the declassified files have reignited speculation about extraterrestrial life, the US government resolutely said that there is no evidence pointing to alien activity.

“No,” wrote the official UAP NASA website in response to questions about whether there is any data supporting the idea that UAPs are evidence of alien technology.

“Most UAP sightings result in very limited data, making it difficult to draw scientific conclusions.”

NASA previously conducted independent investigations into UAP reports from 2022 to 2023 and found no evidence of any alien activity. Most sightings, it said, are likely related to optical illusions, poor image quality, birds, or foreign surveillance technology.

One intriguing archive comes from the Gemini VII mission in 1965. Astronauts Frank Borman and Jim Lovell reported seeing an unknown object in Earth’s orbit several hours after the launch. Borman described the object as “hundreds of little particles going by.”

Other documents originate from the Apollo 11, Apollo 12, and Apollo 17 missions. The transcripts mention astronauts reporting various unidentified “flashes” and “particles of light” on the moon’s surface. However, these cases remain unexplained due to lack of sufficient data.

According to NASA, some UAP files remain classified not because of the objects observed, but because of sensitive military technology used to record these phenomena. The US Department of Defense has also stated that they will continue to release additional UAP documents periodically over the next few weeks.
