Glads defeat Glen Lake (soccer)

Traverse City St. Francis caught fire in the second half after falling behind against Glen Lake to come back and win 2-1 Friday, May 1.

The Gladiators (11-1) controlled time of possession throughout the majority of the game, especially in the first half, but the Laker (4-4-1) defense wouldn’t break.

After a barrage of shots from St. Francis 20 minutes into the game, Glen Lake got out on a fast break after a Glad defensive breakdown, where Glen Lake freshman Brook Cooper threaded a shot to the left corner to go up 1-0.

The Lakers gained much-needed confidence from the goal and played more on the front foot, leading at halftime.

Traverse City St. Francis slowly got it going in the second until senior Sidney Peters made brilliant touches past multiple Laker defenders to even the score 1-1 with 30 minutes remaining.

Shortly after Peters, Gladiator senior Reese Muma found Collins at the top of the box for a lethal shot to take a 2-1 lead.

The Gladiators would maintain possession and run out the time to continue an impressive run with an 11-1 record.

A strong defense for Glen Lake, led by juniors Nora Ciolek and Taylor Randolph and sophomore Nadia Ihme, kept the Lakers in the game against the regional powerhouse.

Glen Lake (4-4-1) hosts Manistee Friday.

Frankfort senior Cash Rosum, Glen Lake senior Brody Switzer, and Leland senior Howie Kropp managed +3 (39) at the Tom Bendelow-designed course (1915).

Rosum was consistent, going bogey, par throughout the match, while Switzer recovered from a double-bogey two-hole stretch to start with a birdie on three, followed by four pars in a row. Kropp had five bogeys and four pars to find himself tied for the lead.

The Lakers won the team event to notch their second conference win of the season, beating Leland by 4 strokes, 165-169.

“Our team has a ton of talent and even more potential. With 7–8 guys capable of going low on any given day, it creates a competitive environment that pushes everyone to be better. I love seeing different players step up and help get the job done,” Glen Lake golf coach Peyton McDonough said.
