A summer spent battling wildfires helped spark an unexpected career trajectory for Montana student Alice Brummer, who has landed a competitive aerospace internship tied to NASA research.

Brummer, a second-year computer science student at Montana Technological University, was recently selected for a Montana Space Grant Consortium Autonomous Aerial Systems Office internship.

The program, part of NASA’s National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program, places students in hands-on aerospace research.

Brummer credits her time as a wildland firefighter with shaping her goals. What began as a potential career path evolved into a vision of combining technology with frontline emergency response.

This summer in Missoula, she’ll help develop drone systems designed for wildfire environments, including tools to detect heat signatures and monitor dangerous conditions in real time.
