Leland girls soccer is ready to prove itself once again as the Comets lace up the cleats and get ready to navigate the 2026 season.
“The bond I have with a lot of my teammates is really special, which is different from some other sports season,” Leland senior Hadley Bison said. “I’m excited to see how we do this season because we did lose a couple of seniors, but I think we have a lot of girls coming up that are going to fill those spots.”
The Comets will have to overcome multiple losses after having one of its best seasons in school history during the 2025 campaign with a 13-3-1 record.
Leland seniors Lorna Wiesen, Willa Murray, Addie Waskiewicz and Bison have contributed to the team all four years and are now in the coveted leadership roles for the Comets.
“It doesn’t really feel real yet,” Wiesen said. “We have a tough schedule this year, so I think that will prep us for our postseason run.”
Leland will certainly have a target on its back as they play Western Michigan Christian, Big Rapids, Northville, among other top competition to gear up for a deep playoff run.
“It means a lot being a senior leader. I’m super excited, and I think that all of us seniors are excited to give our all, since it’s our last run as a team. We are ready to work hard and put a lot of effort into what we play and how we play this year,” Waskiewicz said.
The Comets captured its first district championship since 2015 last season with a 2-1 win over Harbor springs.
Murray who scored he gameclinching goal to win the district championship has even higher expectations for her Comets this season.
“It’s weird that it’s going to be our last year playing together, but I really want it to be a meaningful year and also to have the team be in good shape for the next few years after us as well,” Murray said.
Leland started the season early on March 21, before spring break, traveling to North Muskegon and suffering a 4-0 loss.
The Comets returned to the pitch yesterday before facing Hart Saturday.
“I want us working together, which is going to be really important. We have to do our best and encourage each that will be the most important thing early in the season,” Wiesen said.
