The UFO over Vranov, sometimes also called the incident over Vranov, is the most famous and at the same time probably the most serious incident of the observation of an unidentified flying object over Czech territory. This incident took place on July 12, 1987 above the Vranov water reservoir, which was full of visitors. The 51st helicopter regiment was ordered to pursue the object. Lieutenant Jaroslav Špaček mentioned the incident in the book Fifty-first, or the history of the 51st helicopter regiment, cheerfully and seriously. The observation began at 12 o'clock local time. The crew of the helicopter regiment was ordered to chase an unknown object. The weather on the day of the event was typical for the period and climate, there were cumulus clouds at a height of more than 1.5 km. The object, i.e. the target of the helicopter regiment, was first located in Austria, near the state border. At first, the pilots thought that the guidance station was vectoring them to the cloud. After a while, a black object in the shape of a cigar flew over them. They received instructions from the ground to shoot down the object, but according to the pilots' description, the machine behaved very strangely. Whenever the machine was pointed in the crosshairs, it immediately changed direction. In addition, shooting was also not possible due to the fact that they were located above the Vranovská dam, which was full of people, i.e. vacationers. After two minutes of visual contact, the object disappeared behind a cloud. The pilots flew on. First Lieutenant Jaroslav Špaček claims: "Then probably the worst situation occurred during the entire flight." The object was flying directly towards their helicopter and they had to avoid it with great difficulty. At a high, evidently supersonic speed, the object, the target of the helicopter regiment, then moved over Brno, Jaslovské Bohunice and towards Bratislava, where after a while it was no longer visible on the radar. Thirty years later, new facts emerged in the investigation of this case. Two L-39 Albatros planes were to be tasked with chasing the unidentified flying object, which took off from the Brno airport and chased the plane towards Dukovany, from where they followed the "UFO" back to Brno and further to the Slovak border. However, the object reached a high speed and was lost to them over Bratislava. He continued towards Jaslovský Bohunice and then back over Austria.
Eduard Nový, a former member of the border guard, was a guest of Czech researcher Jaroslav Mareš in 2018, where he said that at the time he was a member of the border guard on the border between Austria and Czechoslovakia, and he watched the event from the ground.
