This was my first ever attempt at anything astrophotography related, I’m usually an automotive photographer but want to delve into more regions. Please note that this was simply shot on a whim in my backyard!

This was shot on my trusty Canon EOS 5Ds using the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L USM II lens at 200mm. Freehand, ISO 100, 1/120 shutter speed and f/2.8 aperture.

Processed in adobe lightroom 2026, just light edit work. Added texture, clarity. Adjusted highlights and shadows and finally, a MASSIVE crop since it was shot at 200mm (default resolution is 8736×5856 and this image is cropped to 1887×1258)

I would love any type of constructive criticism, I already know some flaws I made like leaving the aperture at f/2.8 instead of stopping down to say f/8. Then I could’ve used a tripod to allow a longer exposure, increasing ISO might’ve been helpful too but I like to keep it as low as I can since the noise gets out of hand extremely quickly. Even at 1600 ISO I have a lot of noise and have to use Lightroom’s built in noise removal system, and that’s car photography with wide open aperture and like 1/100 shutter speed in a decently lit parking lot. Anyway, there’s some things I definitely could get better and intend to nail next time. I’d also love to pick up a Canon 300mm f/2.8L lens and a teleconverter so I can get more zoom but as it is I don’t tend to use my 70-200 often enough so I can’t imagine I’d use a 300mm prime that much. OH! I’d also like to do an HDR shot to try and get some stars in the background and the entire moon in the image while still having the dark side dark.
