Imagine a franchise dominates the sport, and then poof, gone in an instant.

That is what WNBA fans feel when the legendary Houston Comets franchise is discussed. The first dynasty of the WNBA in its infancy had multiple Basketball Hall of Famers, and league championships.

And they’re coming back.

According to ESPN, the Connecticut Sun will be moving to Houston at the end of this season, following the purchase of the team by Houston area tycoon, Tillman Fertitta. The purchase was made for $300 million dollars.

The Comets won the first four WNBA championships led by Cynthia Cooper, Tina Thompson, and Sheryl Swoopes. During their playoff run from 1997-2000, the Comets lost just three postseason games in that span.

However, following the 2000 season, the franchise started to fall back and join the pack of teams that had caught up to them. In addition to the struggles to remain atop the league, attendance, support and financial troubles began and the franchise ended operations in 2008.

Fans of the Comets, and basketball in general have opined for the days when the Comets return to the WNBA, and it appears we are getting just a few steps closer.

The 2026 WNBA season begins on May 8.
