The movement known as Afrocentrism has sparked major debate by claiming that ancient Egyptians were Black in the modern racial sense. However, the scientific reality is far more complex.
Archaeological and anthropological evidence shows that the population of ancient Egypt was diverse, shaped by Nile Valley peoples and North African groups, with variations in physical features and skin tones due to geography and long-term interactions.
DNA studies on mummies—published in sources like Nature Communications—indicate genetic affinities with populations from the Eastern Mediterranean and North Africa, alongside varying levels of Sub-Saharan African influence over time.
Most importantly, ancient Egyptians did not define themselves using modern racial categories like “Black” or White. Their identity was cultural and civilizational, rooted in language, land, and religion. Reducing such a complex civilization to a single racial label oversimplifies history.
Not Black or White in modern terms—but a complex, multi-origin civilization.
