What is Saint Petersburg (1703) doing on this map from 1688?

    The Russian city is named after St. Peter.

    Hence the name St. Petersburg.

    There was a fort there, established by the Swedish, with a church founded in the name of St. Peter.

    Not that it matters. St. Petersburg doesn’t show up in the original Rossi map from 1688. It was reprinted with alterations several times over the decades that followed, including newer additions, and this is one of those revisions with the original cartouche.
