In the mountainous region of southern China lies the world’s largest radio telescope, the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST). With a diameter of 500 meters, it was constructed by the Chinese government in 2016 to detect radio signals from extraterrestrial civilizations. “China wants to be the representative of humanity to encounter an alien civilization, as it is the most populous country,” said Lee Myung-hyun, a radio astronomer and head of SETI Korea.
What would actually happen if humanity encountered an alien civilization? To celebrate the release of the sci-fi movie ‘Project Hail Mary,’ which depicts humans encountering extraterrestrial intelligence, ‘Sees’ held an “Alien Movie World Cup” with Dr. Lee Myung-hyun.
Dr. Lee predicted which scenario among various sci-fi works, such as ‘Contact’ and ‘E.T.,’ would be the most realistic encounter, based on scientific evidence. The results of the World Cup and more details can be found in the video uploaded on March 18.
