The mystery deepens in a new trailer for Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day.

The highly-anticipated return to science-fiction from the director behind classics like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T., Disclosure Day has been shrouded in mystery since it was first announced. With each new trailer and poster, though, more has been gleaned about the film’s plot and, in the latest release, the mystery has been blown wide open.

Universal has dropped a new trailer for Disclosure Day that finally sheds more light on the film’s plot. Check it out below:

The trailer begins with a clip of Eve Hewson and Josh O’Connor’s characters. O’Connor’s dialogue indicates he’s a whistle-blower of sorts, seemingly having stolen top-secret data about aliens that he intends to share with the world. He also reveals that he understands the alien language spoken by Emily Blunt’s character on a news broadcast that captures the world’s attention, a moment featured prominently in Disclosure Day’s first trailer.

From there, Hewson, Blunt, and O’Connor’s characters become involved in a larger conspiracy as the latter reveals plans to expose this data to the entire world. In addition to this core trio, Spielberg has brought together a star-studded cast that also includes Colman Domingo, Colin Firth, Wyatt Russell, and Elizabeth Marvel.

The official synopsis for Disclosure Day is as vague as the earliest trailers, reading, “If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you? This summer, the truth belongs to seven billion people. We are coming close to … Disclosure Day.”

Disclosure Day is written by David Koepp, who previously worked with Spielberg on Jurassic Park, The Lost World, 2005’s War of the Worlds remake, and the fourth Indiana Jones movie, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Most recently, Koepp penned the screenplays for Black Bag and Jurassic World Rebirth.

Spielberg is coming off two critically acclaimed films, having released his remake of musical West Side Story in 2021 before helming the semi-autobiographical drama The Fabelmans in 2022. Both earned acclaim from critics and garnered numerous accolades and award nods. Disclosure Day is a welcome return to genre filmmaking for the director.

It’s been 8 years since he released sci-fi actioner Ready Player One, which was released to mostly positive reviews. Disclosure Day, however, feels like a return to the director’s roots, with some of his most famous works hailing from the science-fiction realm, including the aforementioned Close Encounters and E.T., as well as A.I. Artifical Intelligence, Minority Report, and War of the Worlds.

Disclosure Day is coming at a particularly timely moment, too, as discussions around publicly available knowledge about the existence of UFOs and how much the government knows about extraterrestial life permeates every aspect of culture, from social media feeds to actual government hearings.
