WAPAKONETA, Ohio (WLIO) — While many students enjoyed a day off from school for Presidents Day, some children in Wapakoneta spent the holiday having out-of-this-world fun.

The Armstrong Air and Space Museum offered special hours for the holiday, giving children and their families the opportunity to take part in a hands-on STEM activity.

Throughout the day, participants created their own constellation projectors. Using well-known constellation patterns as a guide, children used a thumbtack to punch the design into aluminum foil. Once finished, the room lights were turned off, flashlights were switched on and the young astronomers projected their constellations onto the ceiling — an activity designed to spark interest in space science.

“Sort of introducing them to some of the concepts that we’ve had and seeing the constellations and maybe they will start looking up more. They might have a new fascination for space and hopefully that spark continues and hopefully it started right here at the museum,” says Logan Rex, Curator & Communications Director, Armstrong Air & Space Museum.

On Friday, Feb. 20, the museum will host the Friendship 7 anniversary presentation at 1 p.m. as part of its America 250 series, commemorating the historic flight piloted by John Glenn.
