Star forming region ~5000 light years away from earth and ~150 light years across. It surrounds NGC2244, a cluster of stars in the Monoceros constellation. These stars were formed from the nearby gas and dust. The nebula's rose shape is from the stellar winds blowing out. The colors are from the gas and dust atoms being irradiated by the stars they're surrounding like how neon signs work making this an "emission nebula". The pillars are believed to be the active star forming regions. It's easily one of the most photogenic and photographed nebula out there🤯😍🤯😍
