Cygnus Setting Among the Layers

  1. As best I can tell, this is the Bullion Mountain range, which sits north of Joshua Tree National Park (though admittedly this is a guess, I’ve had a hard time finding specific mountain names in the his part of the desert) – regardless, I always find these mountains impressive when I visit. I typically visit in the spring, when the sky isn’t as interesting over these mountains, but when I went last fall I was delighted to find the Cygnus sets right over them.

For this particular image, I got to use two new filters. The first, and probably most obvious, is the Sii / Oiii dual band filter, which allows for the blues and yellows you see here, that are missing from most wideband astrophotography, which is gravitated more toward the Ha filters. This filter, in addition to my more typical tri-band filter allowed for a more detailed view of what’s there, which was really exciting for me. The second filter is my “night vision” filter, which allows for more details in the foreground at a lower exposure by letting in infrared light above a certain threshold.

Entire image captured from the same tripod position, using a full spectrum modified Canon R5, using a Sigma 24 – 105 lens, at 70mm. Sky is 31 2.5min exposures, ISO 1600, f/2.8 using the triband filter, and the same settings and number of exposures for the dualband filter mentioned. The foreground is 5 images ISO 800, 2.5mins, f/8 stacked for noise removal.

    Location – Mojave Desert, California
