A doctor located at the European Space Agency’s site in Oxfordshire conducted a remote dental exam on a simulated patient 650 km away in Scotland, using a robotic arm operated via space-enabled 5G.

Backed by the UK Space Agency, the demonstration highlights the key role of satellite connectivity in facilitating essential medical care, especially in isolated communities with patchy conventional network coverage.

Following the checkup, medication was delivered to the patient on a 5G-enabled drone, showing how multiple next-generation technologies can work in combination to ensure patients receive both timely evaluations and treatments.

The demonstration is part of ESA’s 5G REMOTE project and was carried out as part of a collaboration between ESA’s Connectivity and Secure Communications directorate and the Glasgow Next‑Generation (GXG) testbed at the University of Glasgow. It was funded under ESA’s programme of Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES), with support from the UK Space Agency.

You can read the full story about the demonstration on the Connectivity and Secure Communication pages of esa.int.
