3I/ATLAS, the third-ever interstellar object to traverse through the solar system after 1I/Oumuamua (2017) and 2I/Borisov (2019), entered the interstellar boundaries of our yard some 8000 years ago. It was spotted by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) observatory on July 01, 2025.
On October 27, it entered the perihelion phase, which was supposed to obliterate the object; however, the exocomet showed multiple jets with an anti-tail that extends towards the sun. Recent pictures by Hubble, as noted by Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb, reveal 3 symmetrical mini-jets! These are but a handful of the 18 anomalies flagged by Prof. Loeb. There were speculations that the Earth flyby of 3I/ATLAS on December 19 would be revelatory, as it passed closest to the planet by 1.8 AU or 270 million kilometers.
The bizarre interstellar visitor now is headed towards the Jovian satellite Eupheme with a rendezvous on March 16. The NASA & ESA probes will capture as much data of the event as possible and send it, which will take a few months to arrive and process. However, tomorrow, the 23rd of January, at 5 am IST, the exocomet will be under the lenses of The VIrtual Telescope Project, based out of Italy.
The exocomet will appear brighter than usual as it enters a rare “full moon phase” with its opposition on Earth and Sun’s axial path. The live streaming video link is pinned on top of the article. Unfortunately 3I/ATLAS is now beyond the scope of regular telescopes and binoculars for viewing. Your best chance is the live stream. Don’t miss the event.
