The baffling exocomet 3I/ATLAS is still in the solar system and will exit in a few months from now. Discovered on July 1, 2025 by the ATLAS observatory, the third-ever recorded interstellar interloper, after 1I/Oumuamua (2017) and 2I/Borisov (2019), has drawn much public attention. There’s still more data to arrive from various probes and observatories that continue to observe 3I/ATLAS. Some of the characteristics of the exocomet don’t make sense. Harvard astrophysicist and head of the Galileo Project. Avi Loeb has been documenting all the anomalous properties on the interstellar object. Here’s the 18th one he flagged in his recent Medium blog entitled, “Are the Three Mini-Jets, Coming Out of 3I/ATLAS at 120 Degree Separation, a Technological Signature?”
For the unversed, 3I/ATLAS passed by the Sun on October 27, 2025, an event known as perihelion. Post the perihelion phase, astronomers found several jets emanating from the exocomet. One of the images captured by NASA’s space telescope Hubble shows 3 mini-jets that are oddly symmetrical, fanning out 25,000 kilometers in the void. Each of the mini-jets are separated by 120 degrees. Alongside the 3 mini-jets, there’s a fourth anti-tail that is extending 10 times farther towards the sun’s general direction—another oddity.
Prof. Loeb notes that these 3 symmetric jets are found in 24 other Hubble images after applying the Larson-Sekanina filter. Presented in a paper co-authored by Toni Scarmato, the Harvard scientist states
It demonstrates that the jet structure around 3I/ATLAS wobbles periodically by +/-20 degrees over a period of 7.1 hours. The wobble is likely the result of rotation, with each jet behaving like a misaligned beam from a rotating lighthouse. The rotation axis is oriented surprisingly close (within 10–20 degrees) to the sunward direction, as already inferred back in August 2025
Loeb further cites billionaire scientist and his colleague Dr Frank Laukien,
The symmetric 120-degree angular spacing between the 3 mini-jets is astounding! It is hard to imagine such a symmetry in a natural macroscopic object. A key question is: are three symmetric mini-jets the minimum viable configuration of propulsion devices to reorient an object in three-dimensional space? Human-made satellite thrusters usually come in pairs in opposing directions. Could the mini-jet geometric arrangement be an indication of active technology?
Is it?
