ST. ALBANS – The BFA-St. Albans Comets hosted the Missisquoi Valley Union Thunderbirds for an in-county basketball game on Monday, Dec. 29, in a game that was full of back-and-forth action. When the final buzzer rang, BFA earned the 50- 36 victory.
Despite being able to get on the board first, MVU quickly found themselves down a few baskets early in the first quarter. This was a lead that BFA was able to maintain for the entirety of the contest, despite a few comeback attempts by the Thunderbirds. At the end of the first quarter, BFA was up 13 – 9.
The Comet defense was locked down in the second quarter, limiting MVU to just five points. When the buzzer rang for halftime, BFA led the Thunderbirds 21 – 14.
MVU was able to get on the board first to start the scoring in the second half, cutting into the BFA lead. The Bobwhites quickly turned that around, as they extended their lead through the third quarter and into the final minutes of play. As time wound down, BFA held on to a 50 – 36 victory over the opposing Thunderbirds.
After the game, MVU Head Coach Tim Luneau spoke about the team’s performance: “That was the toughest we’ve played BFA in a long time. I liked how we took care of the ball and found the openings. Freshman Aurora King has made contributions every game, and Lillian Loiselle has been great on the boards; she’s been huge for us this year. All three of my senior captains have played all year, solidly; it’s been great being able to depend on them. Savannah Blanchard got her first varsity three-pointer. It was a great experience for the younger half of our team to get minutes in this type of game.”
BFA-St. Albans scoring leaders: Emma Harrison led all scorers with 16 points, Kaitlyn Schoembs had 11, and Lexie Litchfield had 8. MVU was led by Lillian Loiselle and Aurora King, with seven each, and Kelsey Paradee, with six.
