Chasing comet Lemmon in the Moroccan desert

  1. I shot this picture in the eastern part of Morocco, near the Algerian border, during an astrophotography trip. The sky there was extremely pure, close to Bortle 1.

This shot was taken during the first night of my trip. We reached this desert by 4×4 and found a place to set up camp. The landscapes were truly amazing!

I knew that the comet was already visible, so I decided to try a shot. We were surrounded by dunes, so I tried to find one where the comet would set to give it a nice background.

I used a Redcat51 lens, which is designed for astrophotography and has a 250 mm focal length. At that level of zoom, it’s not easy to find a dune that perfectly fits the field of view. In a perfect world, I would have chosen a dune further away, but that night was already wonderful, so I’m still happy 🙂

It was the first night of the trip, and as always at the beginning of a journey, I wasn’t fully prepared and made a few mistakes. I would have liked to capture more data of the foreground to make it more visible without too much noise.

A big thanks to my astro buddy Quentin, who climbed the dune for the picture!
