The early hours of this Saturday (1st) left residents of the Santos coastline intrigued — and on edge.
Around 2:30 am, residents of Ponta da Praia, Gonzaga, José Menino and even the Estuary reported on social media that they had heard a strange sound coming from the sea. According to them, the noise resembled a deep rumble, a metallic creak, "as if something gigantic was moving under the water".
"It was as if something was breathing… but enormous. It didn't sound like a boat or wind," described a resident of Gonzaga. Another resident of Ponta da Praia stated that she had heard something similar before, but never so loud: "It seemed to come from far away, but also from underground. It's chilling."
And with São Carlos's anniversary this week, many São Carlos residents are in Santos enjoying their days off at the beach. So, the question remains — and the invitation: you, who are from São Carlos and are in the coastal city, have you heard or heard about this mysterious noise around here? Leave your report. When contacted, the Santos Port Authority reported that there were no abnormalities in ship traffic during the early morning hours—no maneuvers, no mechanical malfunctions, nothing out of the ordinary.
With this, the mystery deepens. Similar phenomena have been reported in various parts of the world and have become known as "The Hum"—a deep, continuous, and impossible-to-locate sound that continues to intrigue scientists.
And it's not the first time Santos has heard something like this. For decades, residents have mentioned the so-called "sound of the breathing sea" on quiet nights. But, according to reports, the noise heard this Saturday was one of the most intense ever recorded.
One thing is certain: Santos heard something. And nobody knows what it was.
