    So, he ran into some large birds. He was at about 21,000 or 22,000 ft. The highest recorded altitude for a bird is 37,000 feet.

    On October 30, 2007, in the skies near Gherla, Cluj County, Romania Lieutenant Commander Marin Mitrica, an experienced pilot with the Romanian Air Force, was conducting a training flight in a MiG-21 Lancer approx. 6 km northeast of Gherla at an altitude of 6,500 meters and a speed of 850 km/h under clear skies. Suddenly his aircraft’s plexiglass canopy shattered, exposing him to freezing air. Shards struck his face and right eye, and he hit his head on the ejection seat’s headrest. Despite his injuries, Mitrica maintained control of the aircraft, and successfully executed an emergency landing at Campia Turzii Air Base. The air traffic controller guiding him back was his wife, Carmen Mitrica.

    An investigation into the incident revealed that the canopy failure was caused by an impact from four triangular-shaped objects, captured on the aircraft’s onboard video surveillance system. These objects were seen approaching the aircraft, with one striking the canopy. The footage was sent to the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) for analysis, but no definitive explanation for the nature or origin of the objects was ever established. Various hypotheses, including bird strikes, ice, missiles, meteorites, and debris from another aircraft, were ruled out. The incident was officially classified as involving Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs).
