were these for ceremonial purposes only or were they actually used in battle? wouldn’t it be too heavy and ineffective?

It not the size that matters, it’s how you use it.

Those are just blacksmiths skill showoff Or ceremonial swords. It was not an uncommon thing during medieval times. Nothing alternative Or weird about them. Cool swords ofc tough, its really Hard To do such a big blades with 14th century tools.
Ceremonial only. The grips that are sized for normal humans shows that these weren’t made for giants. Unless you think that 20 foot tall behemoths had teensy little fingers?

I wonder if someone like The Mountain actor could actually wield a sword that big effectively if trained.

I’m still holding out hope that things like this are proof giants are real 😁

They *may* have been used with horses. That’s for or against: either holding a huge sword while charging through the infantry, or alternatively used by infantry in attempt to de-leg horse as they are charging towards you.
I’m reporting stuff that I’ve read before about these, including the ‘Odachi’ (a massive samurai sword equivalent,) but I don’t really have links to verify. Because its basically just a hypothesis.

Humans vary A LOT in size. A normal sword can be used by the average humans 5-6 ft, 135-220lbs…but think about a giant like Hafthor the GoT Mountain, or Shaq, or even Andre the Giant. If you’re 7ft+ and 350-400lbs, doesn’t it only make sense that the ideal sword is WAY bigger than what the normal humans use? Check out the pic, it’s Andre the Giant holding a regular 12oz can.
