So, during the second punic war Hannibal had to cross a massive swamp in Arno valley as all other routes had Romans ready to intercept his army, during the crossing he got an eye infection, he did recover although he did lose his eye, but what if the infection had been much worse causing him to die. The crossing of the swamp was before the battle of Cannae although you probably already know that.
