On Tuesday, May 26, Mt. Anthony and the BFA-St. Albans Comets’ varsity softball team met for the first time in the regular season. They had met nine times prior, but always in the playoffs. The three-hour trip brought the second-seeded MAU team vs. the first-seeded Comets.
Megan Gonyeau got the start on the mound and struck out eight of the first nine batters that came up to the plate. She was outstanding throughout the afternoon. Gonyeau finished with 13 strikeouts; she gave up one hit, hit a batter, and gave up only a single unearned run. She was sharp all day and kept the batters off balance throughout the game.
Offensively, the Comets went down in the first without scoring a run. With one out in the second inning, Jillian Smith drove a ball over the fence to give the Comets a 1-0 lead.
In the third inning, Irie Shedd drove Chatham Brouillette home with a double. In the fourth inning, Brouillette drove in CC Smith, who was a courtesy runner for Gonyeau, who had singled.
After a scoreless fifth, the Comets opened up a big lead with five runs in the inning. Emma Parah started it off with a hard shot through the first baseman that was followed by singles from Brouillette, Nora Tatro, and Marah McGinn. After an RBI groundout by Shedd, Smith drove in two more runs. This wrapped up and 8-1 win for the Comets.
The Comets are back in action on Wednesday, May 27, as they host our friends from Missisquoi at 4:30 p.m.
