KALAMAZOO, Mich. — It’s rather familiar territory for the Comets, even if they’re still not the most experienced crew. The Kalamazoo Christian girls tennis is coming off its second straight regional title, claiming the Regional 26 crown with 28 team points to best its next closest competitor (Jackson Lumen Christi) by seven.
The Comets came away with victories from three singles players -Kennedy Price (1 singles), Aidan Ward (2 singles) and Katie Meints (3 singles) -and a pair of doubles teams -Harper Scarlett and MacKenzie Maskill (2 doubles), and Ava DeGroot and Tessa Chairs (4 doubles) -to dominate their competition.
They also earned finalist finishes from their 1 doubles team of Bevin Maskill and Piper Scarlett and 3 doubles team of Reese Rigby and Katy Smith.
“I think that we’re really all positive towards each other, on and off the court. I think we lift each other up,” said Price. “Once we finish a match, we’ll go and cheer each other on. Even though there’s two seniors, it feels like we’re all one together.”
That’s right: just two seniors.
The Comets are a young group with half of the starting roster spots belonging to underclassmen. It was a similar situation in 2025 but one that hasn’t deterred the Comets from looking to place better in the Division 4 state finals than their 10th place finish a year ago.
“We’re such a young team and a young program and we’re just going to keep getting better,” said Bevin Maskill. “We can keep getting better as the years go on and I think that it’s more empowering for us so we can go beat older (teams). So I think that’s a huge motive for all of us, too.”
