A Norwegian startup backed by OpenAI will start shipping consumer humanoids this year, promising rapid scale but facing regulatory and investment hurdles.

The Norwegian startup 1X Technologies AS, backed by OpenAI, announces the opening of a new factory in California, aiming to release consumer humanoid robots at a scale that previously seemed unattainable.

The new plant in Hayward, California, after the completion of construction, will be able to produce around 10,000 robots in its first year of operation.

Robot deliveries are expected to begin by the end of this year, and the company anticipates rapid production growth after the launch.

The company plans to release 100,000 robots by the end of 2027, while expanding production capacity in San Carlos, California.

Plans and Location Changes

Last summer, the startup moved its headquarters from Norway to Palo Alto; a potential move to San Carlos is now being considered.

The 1X humanoid robot Neo, which is currently available for pre-order at $20,000, has attracted significant interest on social networks due to its human-like resemblance.

The company emphasizes that the goal is to expand the use of robots in home and domestic environments, including help with tasks such as laundry and cleaning, as well as engaging in meaningful conversations and, over time, acquiring new skills.

Looking ahead, the robot is expected to assist in elderly care, making the use of home assistants more convenient.

In the future, the launch of the new production facility represents a significant step for the humanoid robotics industry, but new challenges lie ahead related to regulation and the need for investment.

Overall, this move opens a new chapter for the development of humanoid helpers and requires a balanced approach to regulation and financing to ensure the technology truly becomes part of everyday life.
