The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls soccer teams returned home Monday for a River Valley Conference doubleheader with the West Liberty Comets.

The Hawks won shots on goal 10-2 and had nine corner kicks. Kealy Roberts led the offense with a hat trick, plus one, giving her a team-best nine goals on the year. Meadow Flynn had a pair of goals and assists each. Brooklyn Schneider added two assists, Ruth Whitthoft and Gwen Wunderlich had one helper each. Niva Helmuth turned in a two-save clean sheet. Following the match Schneider, Helmuth and Sam Wunderlich talked with KCII Sports about the win.
The girls said, “When it came to stopping them on defense, we just stuck together. We marked up. Tried to work together. Communicate. Really worked well as a team. When you score early it just gives you that extra push. Tonight was about pushing and going on a run. We have worked a lot of passing, communication and possession in practice. (Tonight), I liked how even though we were up, we didn’t let up. It was fun to see everyone play. Everybody that goes out there wants to try their best, work hard and win!”
The victory pushes Mid-Prairie to 5-2 this year, while the Comets drop to 2-7.
The nightcap saw the No. 10 in Class 2A Comets collect a 3-0 win in Wellman. West Liberty was up 1-0 at half and scored twice in the second to finish on top. The Golden Hawks had nine shots on goal to five for West Liberty and five corners to the Comets one. Uriel Andrade-Martinez scored twice for West Liberty, Arlo Means added an assist. Peyton Fox generated three shots on goal on offense for the Hawks while Mac Yoder made five saves defensively. West Liberty stands at 6-2-1 on the season as the Golden Hawks fall to 2-4-2.
